Feb. 5th, 2009 11:03 pmMan, I feel like such a writerly hack. I say this because I've taken up writing fanfics, something in the past that has completely eluded me. But now my real writing has been stuck for a while. Like, not even the smidgen of an idea stuck.
I feel like a cheater using already established characters and settings...but if I took it AU it would, in my opinion, render the characters--and their subsequent backstories, feelings, and inner workings of their heads--pointless. I mean, if I wanted to take Harry Potter, make him a non-wizard (read: Muggle him), and drop him into Jurassic Park as a top-notch geneticist working to modify raptors into harmless lapdogs, he wouldn't be Harry anymore, except possibly in looks. I mean, I suppose he could have some really hot hot sex with Security Chief Snape while the raptors looked on, but he could do it much more convincingly and meaningfully in his own wizarding world.
But on the other hand, I felt really, really compelled to write the story I'm cobbling together now, mostly because it's based on my own curiosity, my own set of what-ifs....okay, so it's also an excuse to get some eventual hot mansex in, but I'm really way more interested in the characters' development over the course of the story. I'm tentatively labeling it as alternate reality because while it uses the characters and their original setting, my interpretation is naturally going to deviate from the course of actual events in the original story. (Lucky for me, I'm jumping from a point in the story which is very nearly the last thing published so far.) Basically, I'm taking canon fact, positing questions, and interpreting in my own fashion to see what might result.
You may ask "what fandom" and "who's going to end up knocking boots?" and I would reply that it doesn't matter what fandom, really, and also I haven't a clue if they'll actually have sex or not at this point...but I hope they will. ^_^ But really, it's for Naruto, which I have never tried to write for, but I have read a loooot and I'm current in the manga, give or take a month or two...which is quite current. (I read scanlations, so I know what's going on years before the Viz translations get published, and a mere few days after the Japanese audience knows what's what.)
As to the pairing I have in mind, I'm not going to say because I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea. I've found it to be a particularly difficult pair, actually, because either the author does it in a manner that makes it too...unbalanced and kinda skeevy, or they get it spot-on--as spot-on as a non-canon pair can go--and it gives me goosebumps. I really think, in the right circumstances, these two can go really, really well together, but I've seen a lot of people who are like "that's sooooo wrong and gross ewww" no matter what. I don't want to alienate the readers. (And yeah, that's a small factor in my oodles of character development, but also these two are going to have to grow together. As they are now, there's like zero chance of them having sex. But I can see them, over time, changing to fit better, to be capable of sustaining a relationship together. I don't know if they'll have a happy or sad ending, or even if they won't have a fight three days later and kill each other. In a ninja world, anything is possible. XDDD )
