Blargh. No, but really...
Nov. 9th, 2010 05:37 pmI'm still wrestling with the concept of the Big Giant Index. The BGI is, I was surprised/relieved to find, probably not going to be as long as I'd feared. I'm considering whether or not to consolidate the Two if by Sea index into this new, bold venture, too. It might be less sloppy that way, but at the same time, if anyone's bookmarked that entry...I suppose I could just put up a link and a "sorry, this has moved" notice on that entry.
Speaking of the Two if by Sea index, I've been messing around with how that index looks, because I happened to pass by it today and it looked so long and full of blank, white space. It seems too long for how much information it holds. So I've played around with the arrangement of the links a bit. I'm still not satisfied. My eyes say "make things exactly even on every possible front!" but my brain says "Impossible! Even if things are spaced out exactly so that each chapter heading [e.g. chapter one; chapter two] takes up exactly the same amount on the page, it's still going to look off because there are more letters in the word 'seventeen' than in the word 'six.'" Yes, I probably could put the information into a table, but I find tables kind of...clunky to work with. Argh. *tears out hair and gnashes teeth*
I know I'm probably making this--all of this--more complicated than it strictly needs to be. I'm being fussy. I just...want things to look a certain way. I want it to be eye-pleasing, and what I have now is not pleasing to my eyes. It looks so boring! (The fact that my journal is an exceedingly boring black-and-white is another issue entirely.) There has to be some middle ground between utilitarianism and a design that looks good but, alas, completely lacks functionality. I just haven't found it yet.
In other news, I'm better than halfway through on the next chapter of Hanyou's Prayer. I'm toying with two other chapters for two other stories, too. And! There's a partly-finished could-end-in-pr0ns oneshot that's been sitting in my metaphorical in-tray for some time. So really, I've got plenty of other things I could be fussing over (aside from the as yet nonexistent index o' doom.)
