Guess what happened at dinner?
Oct. 3rd, 2006 05:51 pmSo guess what happened to me at dinner? A friend of the writer of "Garbage" approached me, and said that the writer wished we (the protesters) had talked to him about it, that he hadn't realized it was offensive, that he had written it the night before so he wouldn't get a zero.
I think that's bullshit.
The friend also passed judgment on what we had done, claiming we "forced him to withdraw" from the class, and how it was a horrible form of censorship that we had done this.
Again, I think that's bullshit.
Then, I gave my answer to this. I said I didn't understand why, out of all the topics to write on, did he choose one so provocative in a class full of women. I said I didn't deny his right to write it in the first place, but I just flat out couldn't understand why he would turn it in for an assignment.
The kicker: the person defending the writer had not actually read the piece in question.
The clinch: I have. I sat down last night and read it in its entirety.
I informed the friend as to the subject matter, and they hemmed and hawed.
I feel like crap. I shouldn't have to take shit from people who don't know what they're talking about over this, who prefer to attack people for their decisions and believe the writer over the criticism without reading the piece first.
